Students will learn a variety of crochet stitches and techniques, how to read a pattern, and will be introduced to making their own original designs. Each participant will learn a number of basic stitches, and have the opportunity to bring home several finished projects - which may include potholders, clothing embellishments, trims, scarves, home décor or gift items. Some history of the craft of crochet, as well as other textile arts, will be covered. All materials will be provided, with a great selection of yarns, fibers, crochet hooks, and project patterns available. Crocheting is useful for the development of creativity, math skills, patience, and manual dexterity. Discover one of the “lost arts,” of our grandparents that is currently enjoying a strong revival.
The instructor, Tammy Slezak, taught herself to crochet at the age of 9, and has enjoyed this craft for over 40 years. Ms. Slezak has taught both children and adults this relaxing and useful skill, and has created many original crochet designs. In the process, she has collected numerous awards for her miniature crochet sculptures and dollhouse textiles, worked from vintage threads. Her miniatures and commissioned pieces are in numerous private collections. She is a member of the Creekside Artists Guild, having exhibited at local libraries and art shows, as well as having items featured at Cooper’s Dollhouse Studio and the Children’s Museum of Chicago.
